Week 9 Term 2 Newsletter

It is hard to believe that we are in week nine and nearly at the end of the term!

It is nice to know that it was the shortest day last Wednesday, so Spring and Summer are just around the corner.

Weird and Wacky Wednesday Mufti Day - 28 June

Gold Coin Donation
Donations will go to the S.P.C.A Canterbury

"Children are encouraged to wear their hair and/or clothes in a unique or wacky way or normal mufti is fine too." (Thank you for your support, St Albans School Council.) Please remember that the following day is school photos - so if hair dye is used it needs to be able to be washed out!

School Photos 29 June

'Heritage Photography' will take individual and class photos on Thursday 29 June. We ask that all children are in correct winter uniform, with their hair looking tidy and their fabulous smiles at the ready. Please ensure they are in winter uniform. Where possible, please use the polo shirt and sweatshirt. We ask that polar fleeces are not too be worn.

Alpine View Retirement Trip - 30 June

On Friday the 30 of June the children from Kahikatea and Totara hubs will be travelling to Alpine View Retirement Village on Prestons Road, to sing to the residents. The children will be leaving school by bus at 10.45am and returning to school about 12.30pm. The blanket permission slip that you filled in at the beginning of the year covers your child's permission for this trip.

Thank you so much for the parents and caregivers that have offered to help on this school trip. Your child's homebase teacher will advise or email you if you are a parent/caregiver help.

Recyclable Junk Structure

On the last day of term the children will be designing and constructing a structure out of recyclable junk. Can you please start collecting items at home that would be suitable for this e.g., cereal boxes, milk cartons or glad wrap containers. You can bring these into your homebase room on either Thursday 6 June or Friday 7 June.

Reports Online

You will be able to access your child's report on Thursday 29 June from 3pm through our STAr reporting system. This can be accessed through our school website. If you have problems with your username or password please see your homebase teacher.

Parent Interviews

Wednesday 5 July - 3.15pm until 7pm
Thursday 6 July - 2.15pm until 6pm

Please note: School finishes at 2pm on Thursday 6 July

You can book an interview through: www.schoolinterviews.co.nz
Our school code is: b6t3z.

Interviews are 15 minutes long and you are more than welcome to bring your child along too.

"We are trialling a new approach that recognises that for some learners interviews have already taken place and another interview may not be required at this time." (St Albans School Newsletter, Term 2 Week 6)

Have a fabulous week!

Structures

K15 and K16 completed two more structure challenges.

The winners of the paper chain challenge.
The winners of the clothes peg structure challenge.

Buddy Time

K15 met up with their buddy class to share some of their favourite poems from the first half of the year.

The Great Roller Coaster Challenge....

We have been taking part in technology challenges as part of our Structures unit this term.  Today the challenge was to make a roller coaster using straws and masking tape that could roll a ping pong ball down.  It was a lot harder than it looks!  We were all aiming to build the longest roller coaster but just settled for keeping the ball on the "rails" the whole way!  Here are some of our design in slow mo!

Outdoor PE time!!

Yesterday we had a great afternoon over at English Park. Mr McKenzie's Kahikatea PE group challenged Totara hub's PE group to a game of softball. The score was very close - one run in it and it was Totara's winning day. Well done!
K17+18 made the most of the sunny weather and enjoyed some mini games of soccer after the inter hub match.

The Lions are here....

The All Blacks are set to play the British and Irish Lions who are touring here. Check out this little clip so we can get in behind the All Black!

Term 2 Week 7

Term 2 Week 7 😊

Another week has flown by and the teachers are almost finished all their assessments. We have had a number of relievers teaching in our rooms over the last couple of weeks. All teachers are given some release time to complete assessments and write their reports. We are so lucky with our relievers as they come in and continue with the programmes we have going in our spaces.

Stationery
Do you need more pencils, glue sticks or books? Is your home learning book or writing book (1I5) almost full? Please purchase either at the school office or from a stationery store and label new items clearly. It is important to have all stationery ready for the school day.

Alpine View Choir Trip
Thank you to the parents that have offered to help for the trip on Friday 30th June. We appreciate your support. We will be travelling by bus, leaving school at 10:45 and returning by 12:30. Thank you.

Cooler Weather
With the cooler winter weather upon us we encourage the children to wear a warm jacket to school. The children play outside at morning tea time and after they have eaten their lunch and need to be nice and warm. Please ensure their jacket is named as there are often a number of children with the same colour/brand of jacket. We are happy for children to bring a pair of slippers to wear inside the classroom to keep cosy.

Have a fantastic week.

K15 and K16 Tin People

We all had fun planning and creating our 'tin people' on Thursday. A huge thank you to the parents and caregivers who assisted us for the afternoon.

K17 and K18 Tin People

We had two really fun days creating our tin people last week. As the tin people evolved we could also see them take on personalities of their own. It was really exciting sharing our people and giving them a name and explaining some qualities about them. We still have a few tins to finish this week. Come and have a look along our window sills and see these awesome creations.
